Lord, I have a question for You

Sometime last year when things were going real pear-shaped in all areas of my life, I came to a place where I decided that I would ask the Lord real questions that I wanted real answers to. To show (myself and Him) just how serious I was about this, I went and got this large A4 size notebook that I dedicated to only asking the Lord questions. Once the question(s) is written I would then some spend time in prayer and, thereafter , I would get on with my day as I expectantly waited for Him to respond.

Now, before I say whether or not He has answered any of the questions I have thus far written in my journal, let me give a bit more context to this exercise that I started. When life became extremely challenging last year, I found myself watching a lot of testimonies from different YouTube channels. Most of these testimonies revolved around people who were once involved in the occult, African traditional religions (ancestral worship), or New Age beliefs and had now found Jesus Christ. One thing that was a common thread among all these testimonies were these people would testify about how they used to perform various rituals within those religions they followed with the expectation that they would hear from whatever spirit they were calling on. The main reason was they people relied on whatever spirit they were calling upon or invoking to give them guidance and so they had an active expectation that that spirit would response.

After watching a number of these videos, a question arose in my spirit. And I found myself wondering why many born again Christians speak to the Holy Spirit but do not necessarily expect to hear back from Him. If we believe that the Holy Spirit dwells within us then surely we should always have an expectation that He will answer us when we speak to Him. In fact, the Lord invites us to call upon Him and promises that He will answer us, Jeremiah 33:3 '‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." These testimonies challenged me to level up my expectation of hearing back from the Lord every time I call on Him.

So with this in mind, I bought myself a fresh new notebook where I could start asking the Lord questions with the expectation that He would answer. The idea of writing down the questions, came to mind mainly because I did not want to forget what I had asked. I have found that many times in the past I would forget questions I had asked purely because life got so busy. Secondly, I wanted to write down His answers so that I have a running witness of the times He responded and what He said in response to my questions. Now, with this in mind, I am sure you are wondering whether He actually answered and my goodness, He sure has! In fact, the very first simple question I penned ended up being an ongoing conversation between myself and Him over the past few weeks. I found myself having so many follow up questions and Him bringing me deeper and deeper into a world of understanding that I never even anticipated my initial question would lead me to. More on that as well as what I learnt about what His answers reveal about His nature in a future post.

For now, I encourage you to consult the Lord. Ask Him your questions, write them down and wait in expectation that He will answer. And when He does, write His answers down, bask in the wonder that He is and feel free to ask Him more questions. He is faithful to answer and bring clarity in any situation your facing.

'For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord to see and to hear his word, or who has paid attention to his word and listened?' Jeremiah 23:18
